π The Lion Rock at Sigiriya in 2025
The Lion Rock at Sigiriya is one of the most visited attractions in Sri Lanka. Once you see it, in person or in photos, you’ll quickly understand why. Dubbed “the eighth wonder of the world”, this fortress is both a historical treasure and a natural wonder. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s a must-see for those with a passion for history and breathtaking scenery.
π Formation of the rock at Sigiriya
Sigiriya is a unique rock formation. This imposing column of rock rises 370 meters above the surrounding jungle. Its flat top was formed over 200 million years ago from the magma of an extinct volcano. Today, it dominates the landscape with a captivating, mystical aura.
π The fascinating history of the rock
Sigiriya is also a remarkable example of ancient urban planning. Built over 1,500 years ago, this fortress has a rich and eventful history.
- Prehistoric origins: Inhabited since prehistoric times, the site served as a refuge for Buddhist monks as early as the 3α΅ century BC.
- A kingdom on high: In 477 EC, after usurping the throne by murdering his father, King Kashyapa transformed Sigiriya into a capital to protect himself from his brother Moggallana. The result? A spectacular palace built at the top, requiring immense manpower and impressive skills.
When Moggallana regained the throne, the site became a Buddhist monastery before being abandoned. It wasn’t until the 19α΅ century that the British rediscovered this historic gem, and excavations began in 1895.

π Preparing to climb
The main objective of the visit is to climb to the top to admire the remains of the palace and the spectacular view. Here are a few tips to make the most of this adventure:
- Times: The site opens at 6:30 am. Arrive early to avoid the crowds and sweltering heat.
- Essential equipment: Bring a bottle of water, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat to protect yourself from the sun.
- Physical preparation: Although the climb is not technically difficult, it is demanding, with 1,860 steps. Take your time and take advantage of breaks to admire the view.
πΌοΈ La galerie des Demoiselles
Halfway up the climb, don’t miss the Galerie des Demoiselles. This 5α΅ century fresco depicts female figures in vibrant colors. Preserved in exceptional condition, it bears witness to the cultural richness of the period.
π Watch out for hornets
On the way up, you may come across hornets’ nests on certain sections. But don’t panic! Stay calm, avoid sudden movements or shouting, and you’ll be fine. These moments add a little thrill of adventure to your climb.
π¦ Lion’s paws
On the north side, the giant lion’s paws mark the main entrance. In the past, an entire carved lion adorned the entrance, but today only the paws remain. They remain impressive, however, and symbolize the power of King Kashyapa.
ποΈ The summit: a 360Β° view
The last stage of the climb is the most demanding, with steep, sun-exposed steps. But the reward is unforgettable:
- π Panoramic view: From mountains to verdant jungles, the landscape is a natural masterpiece.
- ποΈ Palace remains: The outlines of ancient structures, water cisterns and an ancient throne recall the site’s former splendor.
- π¨ Refreshing breeze: Once at the top, fatigue fades away thanks to a pleasant, soothing breeze.
π An adventure in the jungle
Before reaching the rock, you’ll pass through a lush forest where mischievous but harmless monkeys will accompany you. Be careful with your belongings, these little thieves love to steal shiny objects!
π O pening hours and practical advice
- Opening hours: The site is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

π¬ My personal experience
We started our visit at dawn to avoid the heat and crowds. The climb, although sometimes impressive, is quite doable if you take your time. At the top, every angle offered a spectacular view, a magical moment that will remain etched in my memory. π
