Being gay in Sri Lanka remains complex. Consensual sexual relations between people of the same sex are technically illegal, under colonial laws dating back to 1883 that have never been repealed. However, no convictions have been handed down for over 25 years, a sign that Sri Lankan society is gradually evolving. Although Sri Lanka is not an openly gay-friendly country, events and parties organized by homosexual groups bear witness to a slow transformation.
π A context influenced by its neighbors: more open Asian countries like Thailand, India and Japan are pushing the island to evolve on LGBTQ+ issues. Since 2011, gay pride marches have taken place, a significant step forward.
π€ Actors for change : The Equal Ground organization plays a key role in this openness, campaigning for LGBTQ+ rights and raising awareness. Thanks to their efforts, significant progress has been made.

Although the island is gradually opening up, explicitly gay-friendly venues remain rare. Here are a few recommendations:

- ποΈ Negombo Beach: Nicknamed “the gay beach”, this is a popular spot for the LGBTQ+ community.

With the emergence of social networks, Sri Lanka’s LGBTQ+ community is increasingly organizing and supporting itself online. Facebook groups and private forums enable members to share experiences, find events or simply exchange ideas in a secure setting. These platforms play a crucial role in creating a space for solidarity and visibility, especially in regions where physical venues are lacking. βοΈ Travelling as a gay couple: Our experience
We traveled as a gay couple in Sri Lanka in backpacker mode. Here are our impressions:
π No major problems: We never encountered any worries with locals or authorities.
π‘ Discretion: Although we didn’t try to flaunt ourselves, we found Sri Lankans generally tolerant.
π Large, open cities: In the south, particularly in Hikkaduwa, people kiss without any problem, showing a certain open-mindedness.β οΈ Beware: Don’t expect gay venues similar to those in Europe. Bars, clubs and LGBTQ+ venues are almost non-existent on the island.
