Ayurveda: A Philosophy of Life 🌞
Ayurveda is not just a system of treatment, it’s a veritable philosophy of life. It is based on the balance of the three doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Sri Lanka, with its rich heritage, remains a must for exploring this practice. 🧘♂️🧘♀️
Sri Lankan Ayurvedic Products 🌿
- Coconut Oil 🌴 Used for everything from massages to hair care, coconut oil is essential in ayurveda. It’s available for around 500 LKR (€1.50) for a small 100 ml bottle. It is also used to improve digestion and soothe the skin.
- Turmeric 🌾 Turmeric is a key ingredient in Ayurvedic remedies, known for its anti-inflammatory and purifying properties. You can find good-quality turmeric powder for around 300 to 500 LKR (€1 to €2) a 50g packet.
- Essential oils 🍃 Essential oils are used to treat headaches, muscle pain and anxiety. Lemongrass or jasmine essential oil generally costs between 700 and 1,500 LKR (€2 to €4) depending on quality and provenance.
- Medicinal plants 🌸 Plants such as Gotu Kola and Moringa, widely used for their revitalizing and anti-aging effects, sell for around LKR 500 (€1.50) for 100g. Ayurvedic herbal teas also cost around LKR 200-600 (€1-2) per pack.
Ayurvedic treatments in Sri Lanka 🌺
Ayurvedic treatments are widely available in spas and specialized centers in Sri Lanka. A consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor costs around LKR 3,000 to 5,000 (€8 to €14), and treatments such as hot-oil massages can range from LKR 2,500 (€7) for 30 minutes to LKR 7,000 (€20) for an hour.
Beware of Jardin d’Épices Trop Cher 🚨
Although spice gardens are a must-see attraction for discovering Sri Lanka’s spices, some can be quite expensive and tempt you to buy products at inflated prices. These gardens are often run by private traders and are sales outlets in disguise. Avoid the spice garden 🌱
Example of scams:
In some gardens, you may be offered products such as massage oils, decoctions or creams at exorbitant prices. For example, a small bottle of massage oil might be sold to you for 2,500 to 5,000 LKR (7 to 14€), whereas it can be found at a much more affordable price in local stores. Some products purporting to be “natural” can fetch even higher prices, sometimes three to five times more than in France!
In addition to high prices, some products, such as “anti-wrinkle” lotions or “magic” solutions for skin diseases, are often ineffective and will only weigh down your suitcase. 👎
How to avoid scams at the Spice Gardens? 🕵️♂️
Here are a few tips to help you avoid being ripped off:
- Don’t be seduced by high prices. If a product seems too expensive, compare it with prices in local stores.
- Choose specialized stores or ayurvedic centers renowned for their authenticity and quality products.
- Be careful with “special offers”. If a salesperson tells you that he or she is offering a reduced price or a “gift”, this could conceal a strategy to entice you to buy unnecessary products.
- Keep cash to a minimum. By not carrying too much cash, you reduce the risk of impulse buying.
My Personal Experience with a Deceptive Spice Garden 🚶♂️
On my visit to a spice garden near Kandy, the experience was pleasant at first. The guide introduced us to the different spices and medicinal plants. However, after the visit, we were invited to buy products such as massage oils and creams, sold at prices far too high compared to those found elsewhere.
We decided not to buy these products and left the place discreetly. The experience was rewarding in terms of discovery, but I regretted not having been better informed about prices before entering this garden. 🚫
Conclusion: Enjoy the Benefits of Ayurveda, but Beware the Prices 🏞️
Ayurveda is a wonderful way to discover Sri Lankan culture and improve your well-being. However, bear in mind that not all products and treatments are a bargain in some spice gardens. Choose authentic places and be vigilant about prices to fully enjoy this experience without getting ripped off. 🌿
